Pittwater win it! Pittwater win it! Oh my gosh, Pittwater win it!!
After 15 years of Summer League being dominated by the Spankies and Hornets, Pittwater have completed their Cinderella story, coming from 3rd place on the table and completing a trifecta of victories during the finals series, taking out the Summer League Championship game 10-4 over the Big Dogs.
After coming so close last year, the Pittwater team led from start to finish over their more favoured rivals to complete a remarkable run of games, beating the 4th placed Brewers in the elimination semi final, minor premier Redbacks in the elimination final and then then 2nd placed Big Dogs in the big one.
Full credit has to go to the managers Eric Mena and Simon Crombleholme who made the tough decision at the start of the season to merge their respective Marlins and Dolphins squads to create one Pittwater team.
The team flew under the radar all season in 3rd place as the Big Dogs and Redbacks fought it out for the minor premiership, before coming up with the goods when it mattered.
Once again Pittwater relied on wily veterans Eric Mena (4IP) and Matt Gomes (3IP) who used their many years of experience to subdue the Big Dog bats with smart offspeed pitching.
For those that watched on last year as the Pittwater team lost the Grand Final in extra innings after Eric Mena completed 7 innings on the mound, you couldn’t help but feel his time had finally come and was well deserved as he held aloft the Judy Head Memorial Trophy.
For the Big Dogs, they can reflect on a very successful first season in the Summer League. Co-manager Luke Eisenhauer commented after the game that ‘You sometimes need to lose a Grand Final before you win one’. After seeing so much talent out there on Saturday, you can’t help but feel that the Big Dogs will definitely have a few more Grand Final appearances in them in the years to come.
So that wraps the Summer League for season 2017/18. A big thank you to all that assisted on and off the field during the season. We look forward to celebrating with everyone at the Presentation Night on the 24th (get your tickets now if you haven’t already!)
However the fun doesn’t stop there. Registrations are now open for Winter League and team submissions are already flooding in. So as the sun sets on one competition it rises on another. Why would you want to do anything else?
